Things I love

What makes a man? There are the obvious choices – money, possessions, power. Not for me – I love my wife, my son, my dog, and my job; and in that order. If I were to lose any of those four things my life would be drastically impacted. Unfortunately my job seems to take up most of my waking hours, which is unfair to the other three. Thank goodness for having such a forgiving family, but it pains me that they have to be in such a situation. I am now in the transition to becoming a manager, and I still have my previous systems admin responsibilities on top of that, so I’m afraid of what will come from all of that. In the past two weeks I’ve worked until at least 5am 4 days, and at least until 2am the rest.

I am currently on vacation for just shy of a week. Since I’ve started on my vacation I’ve been checking and responding to work email, and took the family to work today for our bi-weekly “show-n-tell” where everything current in the company is showcased. I did that because I knew Hayden would like to go (he is so proud of anything to do with me and Riot Games), but is it a sickness, dedication, or an addiction? I’m pretty certain it’s at least a combination of two, if not all three of those.

In addition to work, we also went to Paradise Cove beach in Malibu today, then to Hayden’s jujitsu class. Tomorrow we are going to Knott’s Berry Farm and then to a Judo competition for Hayden on Sunday in the OC. Not sure what the rest of my vacation will bring, but I’m hoping to do some stuff with my new solar panel and planter box (post coming soon on ecoexist), as well as maybe make it to the Getty and/or the beach again.

Nickey and Hayden just got back Tuesday night from their week long excursion to Washington and then to San Diego. They left Seattle *early* on Sunday morning, flew to L.A., were home for about an hour, and then drove to San Diego. That’s a pretty busy week for a 5 year old and his mom! I was hoping to see them when they came home for that hour on Sunday, but I had to be at a class instead. I did end up driving down to San Diego though because Nickey forgot something at home that she needed, so at least I didn’t have to wait the whole seven days to see them. As much fun as it might have been to have a whole week to myself, it’s just not the same coming home to an empty house. The only thing I liked about it was having the ability to watch whatever I wanted to on t.v.

I started my motorcycle training class last Sunday, which I have two more classes left to go. I’ve been riding the bike to work almost every day now and I’m getting pretty comfortable. I really love riding it and have put about 250 miles on it so far. It still blows my mind that it’s legal for me to get on a 630 pound motorcycle with zero prior motorcycle experience and take it out on the streets.

The family is doing well, popby.com is doing well, I like my new job a lot, and the weather is starting to cool down a bit. Life is good.

Okay Mom, this one’s for you

Seeing how my mom called me out on my last post with her comment, I guess I have no choice but to dedicate this one to her for keeping me on track. Thanks Mom 🙂

So lets see… 4th of July weekend was pretty fun. Nickey had a friend of hers come over for a BBQ and she got a little entertainment from the master himself, Hayden. Then the next day we went to a neighbors house for another BBQ with a bunch of his friends.  That was a somewhat interesting experience since there as a Mac guy there, a Windows guy, and me – a linux guy. It was surprisingly less eventful that one might think, but we still had little shots here and there.

Hayden just started playing t-ball about a week ago and it sounds like he really likes it. Unfortunately it’s while I’m at work so I don’t really get to see him play, but I got him a glove, bat, baseball, and a bunch of wiffle balls to help him practice. Hopefully I’ll be able to see him play before then end of the season. I’ll have to take a day off from work or something I guess.

Speaking of work, I just today accepted an offer from Monster Trak to go to work for them. I’ll be going from being the only systems administrator where I’m at now to being the only systems adminstrator there, but at least I won’t have to be the primary on-call person. Apparently that’s handled by Monster (i.e. monster.com). The commute will be a little longer but hopefully it will be a better company to work for. Where I’m at now it feels like every day could be my last due to the fledgling sales and the explosive anger of the owners. It will be good to get out of that situation.

Other than that, we’ve been swimming a lot due to the heat and Hayden has turned into a potatoe and doesn’t want to go anywhere anymore. He’d rather stay in his pajamas all day long than get dressed and get out to do something. So much different than last year where he’d get cranky if we didn’t go do something by noon on the weekends. It’s like he turned into a teenager in the last year! He’s turning into quite a kid though and has a great imagination. All you have to do is sit with him for 10 minutes and you’ll be deeply engrossed in a surreal tale of great adventures and sea creatures and bugs.  Or maybe it will be some super hero on another planet fighting aliens. Who knows. Every story is unique and very elaborate. I’m happy to note that he’s definitely aquired my sense of humor, and he thinks I’m pretty funny. Between the two of us we drive Nickey nuts sometimes. Hehe.

Until later this week, enjoy.
