Pictures of the new ride

Filed under: driving in LA — Tags: , — admin @ 5:55 pm

I’ve ridden it about 2 miles or so around the neighborhood so far. I can tell I’m going to have to get a lot more used to riding it before I’ll start taking it to work. It is a beast.

If I’m going to buy a motorcycle, why not do it right?

Today was a banner day – I was escorted out of work at 1:30 for my last *physical* day at work (I’ll explain later), I took – and passed – my written motorcycle test, and then bought a brand new 2008 Harley Dyna Glide Low Rider as my first ever motorcycle. Hell, I’ve never even driven a motorcycle and end up buying a 1600cc motorcycle. What was I thinking?! My main motivation was to get a motorcycle that I would most likely never have to upgrade from, and secondly, I wanted an American made motorcycle. I have NEVER owned anything but American made street legal vehicles. Never. I get the motorcycle delivered tomorrow and I can’t wait to start riding it. I take my riding classes at the end of August.

Why was I escorted out of work today? Honestly, I don’t know for sure. I gave my notice about a week and a half ago and today was to be my last physical day in the office. Monday through Wednesday I’m still employed by the company but I’m on vacation. I left work to take my motorcycle test and when I got back my laptop had been wiped and all of the system passwords had been changed. It was like a hit – and it was like I was fired. Sheesh – I’ve been there for over a week since my notice, if I was going to do anything destructive or malicious then I would have done it by now. I’m not complaining since I got to leave waaaay early, but it was just the manner that they did the whole thing that bothers me. It was very slimy. Anyway – I guess I don’t need to worry about taking any calls from them through Wednesday since even if there was a problem that they needed my help with I wouldn’t be able to log in and fix anything (I was the only Systems Administrator). I find myself wondering why they didn’t just end my employment today. I’m headed to Vegas on Sunday so I’m not going to concern myself with any of it. This is the closest thing I’ve had to a real vacation in a long time so I’m not going to distract myself with trying to figure out their motives.

Nickey’s mom is coming in to town tomorrow night to watch Hayden while we’re gone. I can only imagine how spoiled he’s going to be when we get back. Hopefully I’ll have lot’s to report when we get back, but it won’t be for a few days (mom!).

I never thought I’d want to

Because of the high gas prices, and because of my new job being a bit farther away than I have to commute now, I’m actually hoping to get a motorcycle. I was always a bit affraid to ride one in Seattle, and even more nervous about riding one in L.A., but I feel a little more comfortable with the whole thing now.  I go to the DMV on Friday to take my written, and then I’m signed up for riding classes at the end of August. If I pass the written then I get a permit to ride during the day so I can practice. Because I get a permit, I’m trying to get a motorcycle soon so I can take full advantage of the permit. Hayden says he wants to ride with me when I get it – that’s even motivation to pass all my tests! I think Loki is hoping I get a sidecar too. I really think he’d ride with me 😉

One thing I wasn’t prepared for was how much more the interest rate is for a motorcycle than it is for a car – almost double in some instances. Sheesh!!

It was a good family weekend

The weekend, as usual, was too short but we had a pretty good time. The weather was perfect all weekend – nice and sunny but not too hot. It’s been so hot over the last few weeks that it’s been difficult to get out and do anything. It was so nice this weekend that we didn’t even get in the pool, and that’s really unusual. Hayden has been pretty engrossed in video games lately so he’s starting to turn into a sloth – and doesn’t even want to change out of his underwear all day. It’s like he’s already a teenager! But usually he will put on his swimming suit an go swimming at least once on the weekends. It’s funny to watch him play video games, he looks soo intent and he has his little mouth open in sheer concentration. I took some videos of him yesterday that I’ll have to format and put up on chrisandnickey.com. One of them is hilarious.
On Saturday we took a drive to downtown L.A. so I could show Nickey and Hayden where I’ll be working next week. From there we drove down Sunset Blvd to the ocean and on to PCH (Pacific Hwy). We didn’t really have an specific destination in mind, we were just out for a drive at that point. We used to go for drives all the time when Nickey and I first met, but once we bought a house it seemed we never had the time anymore. And now with the gas prices so high, it’s becoming even more of a rarity. Our mini road trip found us all the way down in Oxnard which is where we caught the 101 back towards home.
On Sunday we went to a train museum called Travel Town in Griffith Park. They had a bunch of really old trains there that we could climb into and read all about. Hayden was like a kid in a candy store, running from train to train asking, “Can we get on this one?”. They have picnic tables there, and bar-b-ques so we might have to go back again and have a picnic one of these days.
Next weekend, Nickey and I are off to VEGAS!!

One foot out the door, and one stuck in the door jamb

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:37 pm

I gave the standard two week notice at my current job two days ago. Much to my surprise it was all met with, “Oh, okay. Well good luck” and even a “thanks for your contributions”. Hmm. I have to admit, I did expect a little more of the “why are you leaving” line of questioning, but this made it a lot easier. It was almost as if they were expecting that I’d find a new job and move on. Maybe they really didn’t want to know the reason why – and probably for good reason. I was really hoping, as is done occasionally in my industry, that once I gave notice that they would pay me for my two weeks and vacation then walk me out the door. No such luck tho. I never seem to get that opportunity – bosses always like to make me ride out the full two weeks for some reason. I guess they don’t consider me a security risk, I guess that’s good…darn it!

The company I’m going to – MonsterTrak – is about the same size as the company I’m leaving but it is much more stable and (hopefully) far less dysfunctional. They are owned by Monster.com but they only have about a dozen people working in the office I’ll be in. It will be more like a stable start-up. Nickey is happy that I’m now out of the, ahem – porn biz (in case you’re not up to speed – the company I’m leaving is an online porn peddler). On the down side tho – if I get caught with porn on my laptop now I don’t have an excuse 🙂

Don’t forget to check out my other blog, EcoExist and keep up on my environmental antics that keeps my wife rolling her eyes.

Okay Mom, this one’s for you

Seeing how my mom called me out on my last post with her comment, I guess I have no choice but to dedicate this one to her for keeping me on track. Thanks Mom 🙂

So lets see… 4th of July weekend was pretty fun. Nickey had a friend of hers come over for a BBQ and she got a little entertainment from the master himself, Hayden. Then the next day we went to a neighbors house for another BBQ with a bunch of his friends.  That was a somewhat interesting experience since there as a Mac guy there, a Windows guy, and me – a linux guy. It was surprisingly less eventful that one might think, but we still had little shots here and there.

Hayden just started playing t-ball about a week ago and it sounds like he really likes it. Unfortunately it’s while I’m at work so I don’t really get to see him play, but I got him a glove, bat, baseball, and a bunch of wiffle balls to help him practice. Hopefully I’ll be able to see him play before then end of the season. I’ll have to take a day off from work or something I guess.

Speaking of work, I just today accepted an offer from Monster Trak to go to work for them. I’ll be going from being the only systems administrator where I’m at now to being the only systems adminstrator there, but at least I won’t have to be the primary on-call person. Apparently that’s handled by Monster (i.e. monster.com). The commute will be a little longer but hopefully it will be a better company to work for. Where I’m at now it feels like every day could be my last due to the fledgling sales and the explosive anger of the owners. It will be good to get out of that situation.

Other than that, we’ve been swimming a lot due to the heat and Hayden has turned into a potatoe and doesn’t want to go anywhere anymore. He’d rather stay in his pajamas all day long than get dressed and get out to do something. So much different than last year where he’d get cranky if we didn’t go do something by noon on the weekends. It’s like he turned into a teenager in the last year! He’s turning into quite a kid though and has a great imagination. All you have to do is sit with him for 10 minutes and you’ll be deeply engrossed in a surreal tale of great adventures and sea creatures and bugs.  Or maybe it will be some super hero on another planet fighting aliens. Who knows. Every story is unique and very elaborate. I’m happy to note that he’s definitely aquired my sense of humor, and he thinks I’m pretty funny. Between the two of us we drive Nickey nuts sometimes. Hehe.

Until later this week, enjoy.

The blog plan

It’s been pretty crazy lately with my day job, contract job, taking care of popby.com, home projects, and family time which has caused me to get a little behind on maintaining my blogs and websites. I have quite a list of things that should be updated on them regularly but it’s difficult sometimes to find the downtime to update. I haven’t even started using my .com domain yet for my new consulting business like I’d planned to do over a month ago. Sheesh.

Admittedly, I’ve been much better at maintaining , but that’s because that is my creative outlet – I’m constantly looking for things we can do to cut back on our environmental consumption so it’s easy to document what I’m doing in that area. Updating this blog should be easy, but sometimes reviewing the highlights of the last day or week for someone of my age can be a little difficult 😉

Here’s my new plan. I’m going to try to take 15 minutes a day, two to three times a week, and update this blog. I might need some help being held accountable for this plan so feel free to comment frequently to get my butt on track.
