Look Mom, I’m finally updating!

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:51 pm

I know it’s been a little while, and even got a comment from my Mom on the last post that it’s been
too long since my last update. So don’t fret Mom, here you go!

We’ll start off with the three weeks of sickness, just for fun. The beginning of March brought us all a cold that was relatively innocuous. It was the typical runny noses and coughs. Just as we were getting over that then Hayden came down with the flu. His temperature got as high as 104.5, which caused us to take the panic express to the doctor. The doctors office obviously wasn’t “kid friendly” going by their bedside manner but fortunately they did their job and got him back on to the path of recovery. I got the flu too but it seemed to be a more mild case. Nickey, somehow, didn’t get the flu at all. Hmm, maybe she was the carrier!!

Hayden seems to be flourishing lately with all that he’s involved in. School is going better than we expected and he really seems to be learning a lot. He’s up to two stripes on his white belt at karate, only three more to go before he gets his yellow belt. He’s been having a lot of play dates lately and has been making a lot of new friends. He’s also getting better in the pool. He’s still afraid to do much on his own, which is fine, but he absolutely loves the pool. He loves it so much that usually after a while in the pool he’s shivering profusely because he’s cold but is adamant that he’s NOT cold and does NOT want to get out! The kid’s lips are blue and we have to drag him out because he’s not done yet. Lmao. Overall he’s turning into quite a fine young man. Too bad his San Francisco Grandma can’t see him now – he was still adjusting to his environment when she came to visit earlier this year and he wasn’t on his best behavior.

Speaking of the pool, we’ve (Hayden and I) been using it almost every weekend. The water is up to 72 degrees now and is just about perfect. It’s going to have to get a bit warmer outside before Nickey gets in she informed me last weekend, but that should be pretty soon. It’s supposed to be in the low to mid 80’s this week.

Other than that – work sucks but I try to focus on the possitives, we have about six more months until the solar panels get installed, we’re looking into getting our roof re-done, I think I’m going to start on a few cool home computer projects (I’ll update with more details later), and…I guess that’s about it.

More solar, the anniversary, and the new job search

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 6:32 pm

Last week Nickey and I were pretty sick. H-man was sick too but you couldn’t tell by the way he was so hyper during it all. The snot was running almost as fast as he was! We tried to have him blow his nose but he doesn’t quite get it yet – he blows through his mouth mostly, which, if you’re there, it kind of funny to watch. Nickey and I felt like death for a few days and now finally we are almost back to normal.

While I was sick I worked from home a few days and on one of those days we drove to Culver City to pick up a couple of solar water heater panels I saw on Craigs List for $35 each. That’s a really good deal. They did need a little maintenance but not much. I took one apart and have been fixing it as time permits, which isn’t very often. I was surprised to find out that it’s made from two huge copper sheets welded together with dimples to restrict the water flow. Hmm, no wonder it’s so heavy. I’ve been using one of them for the pool until I can get them mounted on the roof. Have to wait for that tho since we’re getting a new roof put on soon. It’s almost a fully self sufficient system. I have a solar “panel” hooked up to a marine battery and a FlowJet 2.5gph pump pushing pool water through the whole thing. I left it running all day one day and it had hardly any effect on the battery. I know I shouldn’t be using them for the pool because of the chemical reaction between the pool water and the copper, but it’s only temporary.

Last Sunday was Nickey and my second anniversary. A full two years. There are a *lot* of people we knew then (and a few we still know) that said it should never happen and that it wouldn’t last. Of course two years isn’t like a monumental test of time but I think we’re happier today than we were when we got married. To celebrate we sort of broke tradition. We got married in Vegas, went to Vegas for our anniversary last year, but decided to do something different this year – we won’t go into what happened last year to cause the change ;). This year we went to Magic Mountain for the day and rode extreme roller coasters. We did that until Nickey rode a ride that didn’t agree with her (a kids ride!) which she never really recovered from. I’m sure we’ll be back again. The park has this thing for the “locals” that if we bought one full price day ticket then we got the rest of the year for free – and Hayden got a year pass for free as well. I think we rode on five or six roller coasters so we got our moneys worth for the day. After that we went to a restaurant called The Vegan Plate. It was a Thai restaurant which was pretty good. I’ve never had something called chicken soy before (tofu expected to resemble chicken in taste and physicality). We had seen it on Living with Ed and had been wanting to try it out. All-in-all a pretty good day.

I’ve been looking for a new job recently, trying to find one closer to home. It seems I hardly ever see my little guy these days. I see him for about 15 minutes in the morning before I go to work – I usually sit and watch tv with him during that time, and only about 45 minutes at night before he goes to bed. My commute isn’t terrible by L.A. standards but it would be nice to have a 10-20 minute commute instead of a 40 minute drive each way. He’s got a lot of stuff going on in his life right now and I want to be a part of it as much as I can. My job is okay, but I know there’s a better fit out there somewhere. I figure I’ve already got a decent job so I’m going to take my time and find the right job this time. I’m in no big hurry.

I still plan on posting pictures of my electric pocket bike, but I still haven’t received the controller yet. As soon as I do I’ll put up pics.
